Snow in June

Today I travelled from Salzburg to Innsbruck, with the goal of spending my weekend in the Alps where the air is fresh and there are no Euro Cup games. This area is stunning. The towns and villages are tucked on the valley floor while the steep sides of the Alps tower overhead. The biggest structures pale in comparison.

Upon arrival in Innsbruck, I found my hotel and went to check in. My room wasn’t ready at the time, so the front desk recommended I go to the top of Innsbruck by cable car and gondola. The station was a short walk through old town Innsbruck. This seemed like an awesome idea!

As I got closer to the top of the ridge, the weather got progressively colder, and the clouds thickened. When I reached the last station, there was little to see other than white. And a lot of snow. In June. Two weeks ago, I was in Australia where it is legitimately getting towards winter. Now I’m in Austria and getting snowed on. Go figure.

Innsbruck from above. The snow storm was directly above me, about 50 feet higher up the trail.

Looking up the cable car path from the base station to the intermediate station.

It was raining at the intermediate station.
