Turkey Won, and I Can’t Sleep
Ugh. Last night was my first true encounter with European football. Turkey won an apparently important victory in the Euro Cup. The result was a lot of honking of car horns. For hours. The incessant drone was impressive in its enthusiasm and duration. I never thought that the emotion of a team’s victory could be expressed with such energy through the honking of a car horn and the waving of flags.
My hotel in Stuttgart is between the stadium and the train station, in a downtown area with several tall-ish buildings. I selected the hotel because it is next to a metro station where I can easily catch a train to the expo hall hosting Battery Show Europe 2024. Despite the sizzling topics at the Battery Show, the Euro Cup appears to be significantly more popular. I can see the appeal. A 90+ minute game with a ball bouncing back and forth between players is significantly more interesting than the flow of electrons between anodes and cathodes through an electrolytic solution.
In any event, Turkey’s success has led to clear fandemonium. I’m happy for their victory, I just wish these damn horns would stop sometime soon.
Turkish fans happier about Turkey than New York Mayor Eric Adams.
