Storms over Idaho

One of the greatest perks of flying so much is the simple joy of looking outside and seeing things from a new perspective. I love flying through and around weather, seeing the clouds and the beauty of our atmosphere. There is something inherently interesting about seeing the ground from above, the ripples in the landscape of the Rocky Mountains, the deserts of the Southwest and the vast, unending farmland of the Midwest.

On a recent flight, I was treated to one of the greatest sights in flying: a thunderstorm to our west around sunset. While flying over Idaho, the thunderstorm lit up the clouds from inside with lights dancing in the cloud as the sun illuminated the sky around. At 37,000 ft, we looked down over the storm next to us, seeing it from above and to our left. The plane banked around the storm to avoid the weather, keeping a smooth ride despite the weather. Thunderstorms on the ground are fascinating and scary. From the air, at a distance, it was looking at nature’s light show in the clouds and seeing the raw energy emanating from the sky.

The video here cannot to do justice to the majestic beauty of nature.
